The election, widely criticized as a sham, saw an overwhelming victory for the military-backed Union and Solidarity Party (USDP), while Aung San Suu Kyi’s party and opposition groups were excluded. The UN described the vote as "staged by the military," with many voting out of fear. Civil conflict continues in much of the country.
